One system, from engagement to filed return
Tax software that checks its own work.
Practice management and tax filing for solo and small firms.
Live In daily use at an active tax practice.
Crosstie runs the firm and the workpaper in one system: the portal, engagement letters, billing and time on one side, a full trial balance and its schedules on the other. When it’s you, or you and a few people, there’s no second reviewer waiting behind you, so when it can’t stand behind a number, it stops and says why instead of guessing.
One sandbox: Practice with a fictional firm — clients, engagements, organizers, invoices, the client portal, the workpaper, and the firm’s own books (Accounting, the one paid add-on). It also has a preview of the 5500 screens, with a fictional plan. Nothing you do there is sent or filed anywhere, and it resets every night.
Two products, two modules
Practice and Tax
Each product stands alone. Use either one alongside what you already have, or both as one system, not two joined by an integration: the documents clients upload to the portal build the workpaper, with one client list, no handoff between the engagement, the workpaper and the return, and time spent in the tax work counted against its engagement.
Practice
Runs the firm: clients, engagements, documents, deadlines and billing — under your firm’s own name, in your firm’s own deployment.
Practice → In developmentTax
Prepares and files the return, on a replica of the form, with every line saying how it got there.
Tax → Live · includedWorkpapers
A full trial balance with adjusting, reclassifying and tax entries, and the schedules that come off it.
Workpapers → Paid add-onAccounting
The firm’s own books: its chart of accounts, its bank feed, its own statements. It’s the one paid add-on.
Accounting →5500 files Forms 5500-EZ, 5500-SF and 5558 with the Department of Labor through EFAST2, free to firms for the entire plan year, from January 1, 2027. 5500 →
What nothing else does
Under both products sits the workpaper
A trial balance with adjusting, reclassifying and tax entries, and Schedules M-1, M-2 and L for the 1120, 1120-S and 1065. The workpaper is a trial balance, not a document list. The return is prepared from it, so figures aren’t keyed twice and can’t drift apart.
Included in Practice and Tax at no extra charge. Workpapers →
